major threat to Queensland’s economy, the state opposition says.
The Swiss miner on Monday said its copper exploration project in the Mt Isa and Cloncurry districts had been put
on hold until there was more certainty on the fiscal regime for future mining developments.
The federal government has proposed a 40 per cent tax on profits from resources projects in Australia, expected to
raise $12 billion in its first two years of operation.
Queensland’s opposition mines spokesman Jeff Seeney says the mining industry makes up about 20 per cent of the
state’s economic activity and if exploration is allowed to run down, falls could soon be seen across the sector.
“Queensland needs the investment of these exploration dollars to ensure our resource-based economy grows in the
future. Kevin Rudd’s super tax is a real threat to that future,” Mr Seeney said in a statement.
“Exploration is critical to ensuring there are mining projects in the future, but it is a high-risk activity
involving large amounts of money and it is understandable that companies such as Xstrata have re-evaluated their
expenditure.
